Watch with date by the Firm of Bordier Frères
–
A fine and unusual Swiss multicoloured gold and partly enamelled open faced date pocket watch, circa 1780-1790.
This timepiece features a brass and steel verge movement with a pierced and engraved balance bridge, complemented by a silver regulation. The enamel dial showcases Roman radial hours, an outer minutes track with Arabic five-minute numerals, and red numerals for the date display from 1 to 31. The watch hands are designed to indicate both the time and date. The varicoloured gold case boasts a hammered bezel and rim, while the back is centred by an oval polychrome enamel scene with a dog and birds. The signature on the face reads Bordier à Genève and also the movement reads Bordier à Genève. The balance bridge showcases an openwork design with the initials PABF, which could stand for Pierre IX Bordier (1712-1789) and his brother Ami II (1722-1811), or Pierre, Ami, Bordier et Fils. The case is stamped with YG twice on the inside back, but the identity of YG remains unknown.

Frères Bordier was active in Geneva around 1725. The company was founded by Denis Bordier and Isaac Bordier as Les Frères Denis et Isaac Bordier but later called Frères Bordier. Denis’ son Guillaume Bordier became co-owner, and then his sons Ami Bordier and Pierre Bordier continued the business. A gold enamel watch has been proven. A gold and enamel watch with pearls from 1815 and 1830 is in the SKM, and another is in the MMA.
