Silver astronomical watch by Hahn

An important German silver open faced astronomical cylinder pocket watch with a full calendar and day/night indicator, circa 1800. Gilt full plate movement, balance stop device, five-arm brass balance, horizontal cylinder escapement, very finely engraved pierced balance cock. White enamel dial, eccentric radial time indication with Roman hours and Arabic five-minute numerals at 6 o’clock, above to the left the days of the week and to the right indication of the months and date. A later custom-made case with an engine-turned back, polished bezels, maker’s mark HR. Dial signed Hahn à Echterd(ingen), case numbered, movement signed Gebrüder Hahn Hofmechanici à Stuttgardt

Gebrüder Hahn Hofmechanici in Stuttgardt. The brothers Hahn, Christian Gottfried (born 1769) and Christoph Matthäus (1767-1833), worked in the workshop of their father Philipp Matthäus Hahn of Onstmettingen, Kornwestheim and Echterdingen. Christian Gottfried and Christoph Matthäus went on to become Hofmechanikus (court mechanicians) in Stuttgart. Christian Gottfried was later recorded in Berlin and in America.
