The double headed eagle is an ancient symbol with origins in the Byzantine Empire, representing the emperor’s dual authority over spiritual and worldly affairs, or claims to rule both East and West. In later contexts, it evolved to symbolize the unity and equal importance of different regions or states, as seen in the Russian state insignia.

The double headed eagle and motto ‘Deus Meumque Jus’ are further prominent emblems within the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, often seen on regalia and temple architecture. In the Scottish Rite, the two heads are often interpreted to represent humanity’s right to full and unrestricted freedom as a human being.
