Gold and enamel watch with chatelaine

A Swiss 18 Carat gold and enamel open faced centre seconds cylinder pocket watch with matching chatelaine made for the Chinese market, circa 1790. Key wound gilt movement, suspended going barrel with polished steel stop work, plain cock with polished steel regulator, plain three armed gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring, polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. White enamel dial with Roman hours and Arabic fifteen minutes, center seconds, blued steel seconds hand and gold hands. The case back with plain light blue enamel, gilt decoration on the edges and in the center, bordered by green iridescent decoration and red dots at the quarters, bezels set with split pearls within bands of dark blue enamel, the matted middle with applied gold decoration, light blue and red enamel. Comes with matching gold and enamel Macaroni chatelaine decorated on both sides, four suspended chains each with an accessory.

Hookless Macaroni chatelaines decorated on both sides are uncommon. They came into fashion in the early 1770’s intended to be worn over a belt, the two ends hanging down.
