The Emperor of China and his court were as fascinated by European mechanical novelties and decorative watches as Europe was by Chinese works of art. By 1800, a pattern of Oriental market watches emerged with duplex or cylinder escapements, a visible center seconds hand, and the movements chased throughout with flowers and geometric ornament.
–
The quality of the fine enamel medallions was of great importance to these highly decorative pieces. Examples of their work can be seen in many of the world’s foremost collections, including the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Musée d’Horlogerie.
–
Unfortunately, one has not been able to attribute an artist to this extraordinarily beautiful enamel scene, as the details of the figures are unlike any other known enamel painter.
