Gold and enamel pocket watch

A very fine 18 carat gold and enamel Swiss verge watch set with pearls, circa 1790. Gilt full plate fusee movement, scroll pierced balance bridge with coqueret.
White enamel dial with Arabic chapters and blued steel hour hand, minute hand lacking. The case opens by pushing the button on the pendant, the bezels are set with split pearls and the back is showing a polychrome enamel classical scene of Minerva and a maiden before an altar of love.

Minerva (Athena in Greek) was one of the most important of the ancient Greek and Roman goddesses. She was originally a goddess of war, hence her armour and spear. She fought on behalf of just causes and is therefore seen as a civilising influence, in contrast to Mars.
