An unusual French 18 carat gold quarter repeating automaton pocket watch, made by Berthoud in Paris, circa 1820. A round, plain case with an eccentric dial, engine turned gold, with Breguet numerals on enamel cartouches, outer chased cornucopias. On a large aperture above the dial, a three colored gold Father of Time is sitting against a blued steel ground. Father Time is sitting in the centre of the theatre scene, holding two scythes. Driven by the repeating train, two Cupids suddenly appear to strike hours and quarters on his two scythes. A frosted and gilt full plate movement with cylindrical pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain brass three armed balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass continental cock and polished steel end piece. Repeating on the gongs by depressing the pendant. Movement and the case are numbered.
