Gold, enamel and sapphire-set octagonal watch

A fine and rare French 18 carat yellow gold, enamel and sapphire-set open faced octagonal pocket watch, circa 1920. Circular gilt lever movement.
Silvered dial with Breguet numerals. Fully cloisonné enamel case in tones of azure, the back centred by a cabochon sapphire, a foliate motif extending in a spiral over the opaque periwinkle background, repeated on the bezel, the band in royal blue, cabochon sapphire-set crown. Dial signed, case numbered. Comes with a fitted Boucheron presentation box.

Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects with coloured material held in place or separated by metal strips or wire, normally of gold. In recent centuries, vitreous enamel has been used, but inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials were also used during older periods, indeed, cloisonné enamel very probably began as an easier imitation of cloisonné work using gems. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné.
