A rare French 18 carat yellow gold open faced montre couteau (knife edge) extra thin Art Deco pocket watch made by Cartier, circa 1920. This watch features an extra thin mechanical 18 jewels crown-winding manual movement signed by Cartier with a lever escapement. The silver colour guilloché dial shows radial black Roman numerals for the hours on a dedicated ring, an outer minute track with Arabic numerals at five-minute intervals, and original blued steel hands. The timepiece is housed in a thin 18 carat solid yellow gold open faced montre couteau knife edge case. It features a blue painted monogrammed JF on the polished back cover. Case and movement signed. Cartier sourced their Couteau watch movements from several suppliers, like EWC or Jaeger Lecoultre. These watches, less than 4 mm thick for the open-face version and less than 5 mm for the hunting-case version, are among the thinnest mechanical watches ever produced.
