Gold and enamel verge watch by Duval
–
An unusual French gold and enamel double dialled watch with calendar, circa 1775. The watch has a gilded full plate movement with verge escapement, fusee and chain and cylindrical pillars. It is signed as Duval à Rouen and numbered 5077 around the perimeter of the movement plate. It features two dials. The first dial is white enamel with black Roman numerals and gold hands, a winding aperture at 3 o’clock and a regulation dial below 6 o’clock. It is adorned with blue polychrome enamel painted ribbons, flowers, and baskets of fruit. The second dial is white enamel with days of the week on the edge, an inner date ring and blued steel hands. The gold case includes gold bezels with geometric engraved decoration, as well as a gold stirrup form pendant and bow.

The watch appears to be in good overall condition, with a few minor scratches. The bezel’s decoration remains crisp, and the pendant has French gold marks. The movement is running.

A Duval worked in Rouen from 1774 to 1778, as documented in G.H. Baillie’s Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, Third Edition (1951). The watch being presented is a simple double dialled watch, with one side indicating the days of the week and date, while the reverse side features the meantime dial.
