Decorative cylinder pocket watch
–
A French decorative cylinder watch in a fine gold and champlevé enamel case with matching chain and key, circa 1835.
This beautiful antique key wind pocket watch has a bridge movement with a going barrel, cylinder escapement and three-arm brass balance. The eccentric silver enamel dial has an engine-turned centre, with Roman radial hours, outer minutes track, and Breguet-style hands. The gold enamel case is entirely decorated with polychrome champlevé enamel flowers and foliage against an opaque black and blue enamelled background. The matching gold enamel chain with a pocket watch key adds to the elegance of the piece. The inner case is signed, probably by an imitator, as BREGUET FILS.

The watch has two markings on the inside of the dust cover and the inside back cover, which read 2032. On the outside of the dust cover is a marking that reads ECHAPPEMENT A CYLINDER/BREGUET FILS/Aiguillee/QUATRE TROUS EN PIERRE. The chain has three markings: L T J T, an eagle’s head with a medium size (which is a recent mark for departments 1809-19), and E + 5 in a rectangle.
