Gold jump hour calendar watch by Blondeau
–
A French gold open faced jump hour calendar watch with eccentric dial, circa 1820. The gilded movement features a cylinder escapement, a plain gold three arm balance, and a standing barrel. The silver guilloché dial exhibits contrasting engine turned finishes, an aperture for jump hours, an eccentric silvered minute ring, and three subsidiary dials for seconds, day and date, and blued steel hands. The gold case boasts an engine turned back and band, a gold pendant and bow, and a polished gold cuvette signed Blondeau, Hger Bté du Roi, Rue de la Paix no. 19, à Paris. It is further numbered inside the case back and cuvette, accompanied by an indistinct maker’s mark.

Movement is not running; the balance appears sticky, likely indicating that it has seized up due to old oil. The watch winds smoothly, with the minute hand adjusting well and the hour hand jumping fine; the day changes around midnight, with the date shifting at approximately 12:30 am. There are scratches on the plates and a small area of slight rippling around a slot in the barrel cover at its edge. The dial has been refreshed in the past, showing some patchy scuffing, but the engine turned decorative scheme is in good overall condition. The case features engine turning in good condition; however, the case maker’s mark on the inside back is difficult to read as it is slightly rubbed. There are no French control marks on the inside of the case or cuvette.
