Joseph Marie Revel was a Parisian watchmaker, watch dealer and jeweller. In 1774, the Revel company was based in Rue de la Fidélité. On August 12, 1775, he was named master watchmaker and then moved to Rue Vieille du Temple, he stayed there until 1783. A little later he was located at Rue Richelieu, Palais Royal No. 118, Galerie de Valois, until 1790, around 1800 in Galerie de Pierre, Palais Egalite, later renamed la Rue Egalité. From 1804 to 1806 the company was active in the Palais Tribunat, renamed from the Palais Royal. In the ‘Waddesdon Manor collection’, there is an original advertising card from Revel, Galerie du Palais Royal, Rue Vieille du Temple. Most of the time his watches are simply signed with ‘Revel’.

Joseph Marie Revel was married to Félicité Regnard. On January 28, 1797, he bought the ‘Du Trou Moreau’ farm in Villepreux, a little west of Versailles. Du Trou Moreau, dated 1571, then measures 148 hectares and was sold for 211,208 livres. This purchase makes it clear that Joseph Marie Revel was wealthy. Even after Joseph Marie Revel died in 1811, the company continued to run until around 1870.

A grisaille (en grisaille), or grey painting, is a painting in which one does not apply natural colours but restricts oneself to depicting things in all possible shades of the same colour, usually grey or brown.
