Gold quarter repeating watch by Charles Oudin
–
A rare French gold perpetuelle watch (Automatic winding) with a fifty-hour power reserve indication and quarter repeating à toc, circa 1820. The watch features a gilded movement with a ruby cylinder escapement, a bimetallic compensation balance, large cylindrical weights, and poising screws. It also includes a parachute suspension, a swinging pendulum-form weight, banking springs with rollers, a standing barrel, and a polished steel hammer repeating on a block. The gold engine-turned dial has a satin-finished chapter ring with Roman numerals, an outer minute ring, subsidiary seconds, a fan-form sector for the 50-hour state of wind indication, blued steel moon hands, and a polished oval roundel signed Ch.les Oudin.
–
The gold case has a polished back, a milled band, and a quarter-turn plunger for activating the repeat function. It also includes a gold cuvette with two photos of etched portraits and engraved flowers and foliage against a stippled ground. The case back is numbered 3120 and bears French hallmarks, with a case maker’s mark.

The movement is currently not operational. The perpetual weight moves freely and seems to be winding the mainspring as the power reserve indicator increases with motion. The balance is sticking, possibly due to old oil. The repeating train is engaging with the plunger, but it is not striking. The dial has scratches near the chapter ring between 11 and 1 o’clock. The main body surface appears generally good, with a few additional small scratches. The case back has been polished, and the milling on the band remains well-defined.

Charles Oudin, a talented and innovative watchmaker and clockmaker, was a student of Abraham-Louis Breguet. Oudin excelled in creating watches with the Equation of Time indication and devised a form of complication that could be integrated into Breguet’s Souscription watches. By 1805, he had established his presence at the Palais Royal, Galerie de Pierre. In 1819, an Equation of Time watch created by Oudin was featured at the Paris Exhibition.

An à toc watch is a pocket watch equipped with a quarter-hour repeater, emitting a sound signal every fifteen minutes. The name à toc is derived from the French word toquer,  meaning to tap.
