Silver pair cased oignon verge watch
–
A very fine and rare silver Swiss, pair-cased, single hand, two-train oignon watch with alarm, circa 1690. The back and bezel are pierced with ringed soundholes square hinge. The band was pierced and engraved with inhabited foliage and an engraved portrait of a gentleman supported by two herms polished split bezel. White enamel dial, chapter ring with bold radial Roman numerals, inner half and quarter-hour ring, central white enamel alarm disc with Arabic numerals, steel fleur-de-lys pointer indicating the hours, blued steel alarm setting hand.

A hinged, gilt full plate movement with divided Egyptian pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement with brass balance and short balance spring, continental type cock pierced and engraved with scrolling foliage, index regulator with an engraved scale on the edge of the cock, alarm with foliate chased fixed barrel and steel train, striking on a bell with a double-ended hammer. Movement signed.

Luc Morin-Marchinville is the son of Isaac; he was a Master horologist who was made a habitant of Geneva in 1688 and bourgeois in 1710. His signature is found on several alarm watches. His apprentices were Barthelemy Lesage in 1679, Jean-Pierre Bouet in 1708, and Gédéon Audéoud in 1726.
