Shagreen covered verge watch by Balthasar Favre

A very rare, high quality Swiss silver, gilt and shagreen open faced verge pocket watch with hour self strike, circa 1690. Full plate movement, key wind, chain and fusee, a floral pierced and engraved barrel for the striking mechanism, locking disk, an applied blued iron ratchet, one hammer and a flat three arm steel balance. Silver champlevé dial with Roman hours, an engraved and hallmarked center, a single hand. The outer case is overlaid with shagreen and decorated with studs, the polished inner case is made of silver, and gold plated brass and copper with pierced sound openings on the back and bezel, a bottom bell. Comes with a shagreen covered transport case. Movement signed.

Balthasar Favre, also known as Balthazar Faure, was born around 1662. From circa 1680 to 1683 he was trained as a watchmaker by Pierre Angely. At 21, he moved to Constantinople (now Istanbul). In 1689 he settled in Basel, Switzerland and moved to Geneva in 1701. Another clock signed by Favre is in the Wilsdorf Collection.
