The company “Dürrstein & Comp. Dresden” secured the exclusive distribution of the company A. Lange & Söhne for the German Reich. Due to its high price, however, the market for Lange watches was limited and so the demand for good quality pocket watches below this price level, which grew during the “Gründerzeit” period, was increasingly covered by Swiss imports.
In order to remain competitive, the company Dürrstein urged its successors after the death of Adolf Lange to offer them a cheaper pocket watch for this developing market.
In 1878 it was time for this project to be implemented. Starting with the serial number 20001, the first low price pocket watches developed and manufactured by A. Lange & Söhne came onto the market. It is still a high-quality pier with the signature “German watchmaking Glashütte”.
The fact that these watches were initially made neither on the dial, nor on the movement as an indication of the manufacturing company, suggests that this production line did not necessarily correspond to the previous corporate philosophy of the Gebrüder Lange.
