Uhrenfabrik Union was established on January 1, 1893, by Dresden wholesaler Johannes Dürrstein. The ‘Union’ trademark quickly became one of Germany’s leading manufacturers of high grade watches, including a small series of intricate timepieces such as pocket chronometers, tourbillons, perpetual calendars, and repeating and striking watches. The Dresden School of Applied Arts produced a wide variety of decorative designs for watches under the guidance of Privy Councillor Professor Carl Ludwig Theodor Graff. The themes often featured architectural motifs and could also include designs from illustrated manuscripts, such as cornucopia, leaves, and scrolls. Additionally, Minerva’s head is engraved at the central cartouche in this example.
