A German 18 carat gold hunting cased quality 1A pocket watch made by A. Lange in Glashütte, Dresden, circa 1870. Specially made for Charles William Schumann in New York, U.S.A. The signed and numbered smooth case with a reeded band, engine turned gold cuvette and maker’s punch mark CWS for Charles William Schumann. Signed white enamel dial with Roman hour numerals, an outer minute track, auxiliary seconds at 6 o’clock and blued spade hands. The signed and numbered frosted gilt 2/3 plate movement with a lever escapement, screwed gold chatons, a gold screw compensation balance, florally hand engraved balance cock, chatoned diamond endstone on the balance, and gold lever and escape wheel.

Ernst Adolf Lange, Glashütte merchant
Triantafilos Ernst Adolf Lange, the third eldest son of Ferdinand Adolph Lange, was born on September 22nd, 1856, in Glashütte. He married Cornelia Clothilde Bertha Beyschlag (born December 8th, 1863) on August 23rd, 1888, in Speyer, Rhineland-Palatinate. For a long time, he worked as an authorized signatory at A. Lange & Söhne. In 1907, he lived at Schillerstraße 8 in Glashütte. Ernst Adolf Lange died on August 19th, 1929, at the age of 72.

Charles William Schumann, American jeweller and watch dealer
Charles William Schumann was born around 1825. He founded the Charles William Schumann company in New York in 1849. Schumann died on November 4th, 1903, at about 78. His three sons, Charles Jr Schumann, George H. Schumann and William Schumann, took over the shop. Although William was disabled and used a wheelchair, he played a role in the business for several years.
