A fine Swiss 14 carat yellow gold full hunter pocket watch made by V. Henri Leuba under the trademark Qualite Tobias, circa 1905. It has a mechanical crown winding movement with a lever escapement, a monometallic balance wheel, and a flat steel balance spring layout, signed VHL. The white enamel dial shows black Roman numerals for the hours, an outer minute track, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, and blued steel Breguet style hands. The timepiece is housed in a round three body, 14 carat solid yellow gold full hunter case bearing a Swiss assay hallmark. It features guilloché front and back covers, the front cover centred with an engraved coat of arms, a fluted winding crown, a sturdy round suspension bow, and a solid 14 carat gold inner protective cuvette.

The Swiss watchmaking house V Henri Leuba represents a fascinating chapter in the horological history of the Swiss Jura region, particularly around the historic centres of Le Locle and Fleurier. Operating as an independent établisseur, the firm specialized in sourcing high quality components from elite Swiss suppliers to assemble, regulate, and market timepieces under its own name. To successfully compete in lucrative international export markets like Tsarist Russia and the British Empire around the turn of the twentieth century, the brand strategically utilized prestigious registered trademarks.
–
The most notable of these was Qualite Tobias, a quality stamp registered by Leuba to capitalise on the legendary reputation for precision established decades earlier by the English watchmaker Michael Isaac Tobias of Liverpool. Timepieces bearing this mark were completely manufactured to strict Swiss standards but targeted wealthy foreign buyers who associated the Tobias name with ultimate durability. Known also for using the trademark Qualite Salter for similar promotional strategies, V Henri Leuba remains highly regarded among modern collectors for producing robust, beautifully cased lever pocket watches designed for the absolute peak of the global export market.
