Exquisite ‘Boule de Genève’ with diamond setting
–
A form pendant watch ’Boule de Genève’ in ball form with granulation and diamond setting, probably made by Patek, Philippe & Co in Genève, Switzerland, circa 1860. The numbered open faced case of this watch is crafted from 18 carat gold and the entire patented case is decorated with a special granulation technique, the middle part is set with rose cut diamonds and the winding mechanism and time setting is possible by turning the case halves.
The typical white enamel dial has an outer ring of gold minute dots, a red Arabic 12 o’clock numeral, the other hour numerals are black Arabic and the hands are gold but the tip of the later added hour hand is missing. The numbered movement has an ultra fine miniature lever escapement with a moustache lever and is constructed like the well-known and signed Patek, Philippe ball watch movements.

The item presented here is a rarity and possibly an unsigned early Patek, Philippe & Co. The watch shown in Huber & Banbery (page 75) is identical in construction, also bears a low five digit number and is additionally punched with Patek, Philippe & Co. Additionally a ball watch with an almost similar case down to the last detail, signed Patek, Philippe & Co, was offered at an auction in 2016.
