Gold automatic pocket watch

A pocket watch with an early self winding mechanism probably made in Switzerland, circa 1790. The plain open faced case of this watch, which was crafted from 18 carat gold, is numbered. The white enamel dial has Arabic hours, outer minute divisions, quarter hour numerals and fine gold hands. The movement has a cylinder escapement with automatic winding.

Cylinder watches from this period with automatic winding are extremely rare. The largest known collection belonged to Jean-Claude Sabrier, author of ‘Les Montres automatiques: XVIIIe-XXIe siècles’. This particularly early example from the 18th century was part of his collection.
