The crest featured on the present example is that of Brown, of Astrop, Northamptonshire, England. It is composed of a bear’s paw issued from a wreath of oak leaves, surmounted by an open hand. These elements signify fortitude and skill in handling arms against the enemy, dignity and generosity, respectively.

One of the best known members of the Brown family was Sir William Brown, who was a member of the House of Commons. In 1860, he donated a building serving as a library and museum to the city of Liverpool which still stands today.

The dial of the present example features a central blue enameled rosette, which is characteristic of lady’s watches from Patek Philippe at this time period. The floral motif, sometimes referred to as a snowflake, was favored for embroidery on lady’s clothing from that time period.
