Black onyx Art Deco dress watch

An extremely fine and rare Swiss black onyx, gold and enamel open faced keyless pocket watch made for Cartier in Paris, France, circa 1925. The rhodium plated movement by the European Watch & Clock Co. Inc. features Geneva striking decoration, 19 jewels, a straight line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance with eight adjustments, blued steel Breguet balance spring and an index regulator. Matte silver dial with Roman hour numerals, an outer minute track and original blued steel kite/diamond hands.

The polished case was made from a single piece of black onyx, has a flat band, inclined edges, a gold pendant and triangular bow, and gold bezel with square gold dots on a black champlevé enamel ground, secured by four screws. Dial signed Cartier France, movement signed European Watch & Clock Co. Inc., the bow and reverse of the bezel with Cartier numbers, punched EJ for Edmond Jaeger and with French gold marks. Accompanied by the original gold tooled red morocco presentation box.
