Unsigned gold double dialled cylinder watch
–
An unusual Swiss gold double dialled cylinder watch with date, compass, and multiple time zones, circa 1790. This watch features a gilded full plate movement with a cylinder escapement, a plain three arm balance, a decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, and a flat three arm balance. It has two dials: the front dial includes an aperture for the visible balance, surrounded by four subsidiary dials. These subsidiary dials display the time for Le Caire using Turkish numerals, Paris with Arabic numerals, Pondicheri with Roman numerals, and Cayenne with Arabic numerals. Additionally, there are two more subsidiary dials for seconds and date, which are combined with a regulation indication (although one hand is missing). The back dial features a compass set against a polychrome enamel painted seascape, depicting a ship in full sail with the sun overhead. This dial is marked at the edge with the directions: Septent (North), Orient (East), Midi (South), and Occident (West). The watch is housed in a gold double open faced case with decoratively engraved bezels.

The movement is operational, with all dials advancing properly. The front dial shows a minor imperfection at the lower right base, potentially the beginning of a hairline crack. The polychrome enamel painted dial has three intersecting hairline cracks on the upper left side, with one extending towards the lower right. The case exhibits signs of polishing and a few light indentations. Additionally, two dust ring screws are very loose.
