Unsigned gold and enamel pocket watch
–
A Swiss gold and polychrome enamel painted hunting cased lever watch, circa 1860. The watch features an unsigned gilded bar movement with lever escapement, 15 jewels, and a bimetallic compensation balance. It has a white enamel dial with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds, and blued steel moon hands. The gold case includes covers adorned with polychrome enamel painted plaques: the front depicts a cherub holding a crown, while the back showcases the bust of a young lady holding a dove. Each panel is surrounded by scrolling chased and engraved decoration, enhanced with black enamel, and the polished gold cuvette is engraved with movement details. The back cover and cuvette are numbered, as is the front cover.

The movement operates, albeit dirty and exhibiting signs of tarnishing and oxidation. The winding and hands function smoothly. The dial displays surface dirt and some minor scratches. The case panel features a painted cherub with scratches on the surface; perhaps the crown had seed pearls set above the diamonds? The lady’s portrait is also crafted in hard enamel but shows no wear or scratches. The chased and engraved decoration remains well defined, although the black enamel has some minor losses.
