Gold and enamel verge watch by Chevalier et Compagnie
–
A Swiss gold, enamel and pearl set pair cased verge pocket watch with gilt metal outer protective case, circa 1790. The watch features a gilded full plate movement, signed Chevalier & Comp, with verge escapement, fusee and chain, cylindrical pillars, a plain flat three arm balance, and a decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge. It includes a silver regulation plate that repeats on a bell to the inside case back, with a slide at 6 o’clock for selecting repeating à toc. The white enamel dial, signed Chevalier et Compagnie, is adorned with Arabic numerals, an outer minute ring, an aperture for winding at 2 o’clock, and gold beetle and poker hands.
–
The gold case boasts split pearl set bezels and a decoratively fluted band, with a case back featuring translucent blue enamel over an engine turned ground, centred with a rose cut diamond set star. There is also a gilt metal outer protective case with a glazed back, and the band of the outer case is decorated in a style matching the band of the inner case.

The movement is running but somewhat dirty. The repeating work is not currently operational; however, depressing the pendant does engage the repeating train, which runs briefly without activating the striking. Hands adjust smoothly. The dial is in good overall condition. The case is generally in good condition, although there is a small chip towards the centre of the back, just to the left of the diamond set star. There are some minor scratches on the enamel and small scuffs and scratches on the case, but the decoration is in good order, and all pearls are present. There is a small chip on the glass of the inner case near 10 o’clock. The outer case shows typical wear to the gilding, which is even throughout.
