Gold keyless watch with split-seconds chronograph

A very fine and extremely rare Swiss 18 Carat gold, keyless pocket watch, circa 1884. With split-seconds chronograph and instantaneous 60-minute recorder using a central hand. Accompanied by the Extract from the Archives. Five co axial Hands, Central Instantaneous Minute Recorder, Made for the American market, sold on December 30, 1884. Hinged gold cuvette. White enamel dial with radial Roman numerals, outer Arabic minute track and concentric chronograph ring with a fifth of a second division, Arabic five minute numerals, subsidiary seconds. Gold spade hands, blued steel minute recording hand.
Nickel-plated movement, Geneva striping decoration, 25 jewels, counterpoised and calibrated straight-line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring, index regulator. Split-seconds chronograph with visible steelwork, released by depressing the winding crown and with push-piece in the band. Dial and movement signed.

This watch has the extremely rare feature of five co axial hands/the minute and hour hands, the split-seconds chronograph hands, and the central instantaneous minute recording hand. Watches incorporating this feature are very rare and to our knowledge, only two other examples of this type exist.
