A very fine Swiss 18 carat gold hunting cased lever chronometer made for the American market, circa 1882.
The engine-turned case with reeded bezels, an engraved floral ornament on the back and an engraved farmhouse with millwheel on the front. A gold engine-turned dome signed H.L. Matile, Locle, 1058, Chronometer, 21 fine Rubie, providing depictions of animals. White enamel dial with radial Roman hours, outer minute divisions with red Arabic numerals, auxiliary seconds with radial red Arabic numerals and blued fleur-de-lys hands, signed Bartens & Rice, New York.
Nickel-plated bridge movement, Geneva Striping decoration, screwed gold chatons, wolf teeth winding wheels, a pink gold train, gold screw compensation balance, blued balance spring with a terminal curve, filigree mirror-polished steel balance cock, gold escape wheel, special counterpoised lever.

Henri Louis Matile was a Swiss watchmaker based in Le Locle. He was born on March 3, 1817, as the son of Henri Louis Matile and Augustine Robert Grandpierre. Henri Louis married Laure Ducommun and from this marriage, three children were born. His son Henri Louis Matile became the prefect of Boudry. In 1876, at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, US, Matile was represented with its precision watches. In 1877, 1880 and 1882 he received awards at trade fairs in Neuchâtel. Representatives for Matile in the US included the Mathey Brothers, Mathez & Co., Star & Marcuse in New York and I. Smith & Brother in Albany NY. The date of death of Henri Louis Matile is not yet known.
