Gold open faced keyless watch by Patek Philippe

A Swiss 18 carat yellow gold and cloisonné enamel open faced keyless lever pocket watch, circa 1882. Retailed by Jaques & Marcus.
Manual winding movement, lever escapement.
White enamel dial with Breguet hours, outer minute track, subsidiary seconds at 6 and Breguet hands. Hinged case, the back, bezel and band engraved with a floral pattern and decorated with cloisonné enamel.
Dial and cuvette signed by the retailer, case and movement signed by the watchmaker. Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives.

Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects with coloured material held in place or separated by metal strips or wire, normally of gold. In recent centuries, vitreous enamel has been used, but inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials were also used during older periods, indeed, cloisonné enamel very probably began as an easier imitation of cloisonné work using gems. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné.
