Unsigned hunting cased quarter repeating cylinder watch
–
A Swiss lady’s gold and polychrome enamel hunting cased quarter repeating cylinder watch, circa 1850. The unsigned gilded movement features a cylinder escapement, a plain flat three arm balance, and two polished steel hammers that repeat on coiled gongs. It has a silver engine turned dial with Roman numerals, an outer minute ring, and moon hands. The gold case is adorned at the front with a stylised gothic altar piece heightened by champlevé and guilloché enamels, and the back showcases a polychrome enamel painted Swiss landscape scene framed by ecclesiastical gothic arches, which match the decoration of the case front. The case also has a heavily chased and engraved band with shellwork, scrolls, and flowers, and the case and cuvette are numbered.

The movement is running. The repeating mechanism is operational; however, it is out of sync with the hands and, after striking the hours, it does not appear to strike more than one quarter. The repeating is very rapid. The dial is tarnished with scuffs throughout. The front decoration is damaged, showing chips and losses to the enamel, mainly around the edge, along with signs of cracking and solder repair around its rim with the bezel. The polychrome enamel scene painted on the back has scratches across the surface, and there is an area of damage in the lower right-hand corner with chips and losses. There are chips and losses to the border as well. Signs of repair are evident along the rim where it meets the back bezel. The cover does not stay closed.
