Pocket watch with jumping seconds and false pendulum
–
An absolute rarity this early pocket watch with double wheel Debaufré escapement with pirouette, jumping seconds, false pendulum and Pouzait balance wheel, made for the Chinese market by DuBois & Fils, in Le Locle, Switzerland, circa 1800. Encased in a silver plain open faced case with a coin edge, this pocket watch bears the engraved master’s mark RB, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication. The original enamel dial, exceptionally well preserved, boasts a cut out design for the mock pendulum and a decentralized hour display an outer seconds division and golden hands. The movement of this timepiece is a full plate movement with a Pouzait balance wheel, an incredibly rare double wheel Debaufré escapement with pirouette and jumping centre seconds. Both the dial and movement are signed.

These pocket watches with «pirouette» and false pendulum are extremely rare. The clock presented here with the number PG139 is identical in construction to the two previously known clocks PG 129 and 127. DuBois built these clocks in two versions, with and without pirouette. All of these watches are rarities, but the Pirouette ones are the rarest. The sister watch with the factory number PG 127 was sold in 2012/Auction 86 at Dr. Crott for about € 30. 000 and will be presented in detail by “Pieces of Time” in London. Another golden specimen was auctioned in Geneva in 1994, formerly in the Time Museum collection and fetched 27.600 Swiss francs.
