Gold chronograph with register and pulsometer
–
A Swiss 18 carat gold hunting cased keyless chronograph pocket watch with vertical register and pulsometer scale made by Patek Philippe, circa 1912. This watch has a jewelled, manual winding mechanical movement with a lever escapement. It features a white enamel dial with radial black Breguet hours, an inner minute and fifth of a second track with red Arabic five minute numerals, an outermost red pulsometer scale graduated to 30 pulsations, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock, a 30 minute register at 12, a central chronograph hand and gold Louis XV hands. It is housed in a case with an engraved monogram on the front cover and has a hinged back. The case, dial and movement are all signed. Comes with an Extract from the Archives confirming the production of the watch in 1912 and its subsequent sale on November 5th, 1913.

The movement is in working condition and the chronograph is functioning properly. The dial is in very good overall condition and remains intact. The case shows minor signs of wear throughout but is otherwise extremely attractive, with no signs of polishing. Overall, this is a very attractive example of a Patek Philippe pocket watch.

A chronograph watch with a pulsations scale on the dial is called a ‘doctor’s watch’. It helps doctors cut down on the time necessary to gauge a person’s pulse and, more importantly, reduce errors. The doctor would simply start the chronograph, count 30 heartbeats and then stop the chronograph to see the patient’s pulse per minute on the red scale without further calculations.
