Gold open faced key winding verge watch
–
A fine French 18 carat yellow gold open faced pocket watch from circa 1820. It has a mechanical key winding fire gilded brass movement with a verge fusee escapement, an intricately pierced and chased balance cock decorated with detailed scrollwork, and a silver regulation disc. The white enamel dial features two winding apertures, elegant black painted Roman numerals for the hours, a fine outer minute track, and a single blued steel hour hand; the minute hand and front crystal glass are missing. The timepiece is housed in a substantial round three body, 18 carat solid yellow gold open faced case with an engine turned ribbed fluted caseband, a sturdy round suspension bow, and a gilt metal inner protective cuvette. The watch comes with an antique ornate winding key.

The two winding apertures on the dial are characteristic of early French timepieces. One hole winds the movement, and the second sets the hands using the key.
