Gold open faced verge pocket watch

A fine Swiss 18K gold, enamel and pearl-set open faced verge pocket watch, circa 1795. The bezels are set with split pearls, on the back a painted enamel portrait of a lady leaning over a pearl-set basket. White enamel dial, Arabic numerals, outer minute divisions with 15-minute Arabic numerals, the centre painted with a putto holding a signature banner over a landscape and gold hands. A hinged gilt-brass full plate movement with turned pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement with micrometric potence adjustment, plain brass three-arm balance, flat balance spring, continental cock with polished steel endplate, silvered regulation dial. Dial and movement signed, case numbered and punched SD on the pendant.

Christian Moricand (1715-1791) was a watchmaker who from 1752 to 1755 was associated with his brother Benjamin and François Colladon. Several other associations followed.
