A Swiss 18K gold minute repeating keyless pocket watch, circa 1885. Made for N. Matson & Co. Chicago. A polished case with a hinged gold cuvette. White enamel dial inscribed Andrew Crawford Chicago, with Breguet numerals, outer minute track, outer red Arabic five-minute numerals, subsidiary seconds and blued steel spade hands.
A rhodium-plated movement, Geneva striping decoration, 31 jewels, wolf’s tooth winding, counterpoised and calibrated straight-line calibrated lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring, index regulator, repeating on gongs activated by a slide on the band. Dial, case, cuvette and movement signed, cuvette and movement also signed by the retailer Andrew Crawford Chicago.

The present watch is a large-size minute repeater in very good condition. Andrew Crawford was a famous capitalist and for many years the western agent of Drexel, Morgan & Co. By the time of his death in 1900 he was earning the then enormous sum of $30,000 per annum.
