Gold open faced pocket watch by The Bordier brothers
–
A rare Swiss verge pocket watch with a quarter-hour repeater and a beautifully painted Kalliope enamel dial, circa 1800. The timepiece features an 18k rose gold engine-turned case marked with the case maker’s punch P&S. The gold dial is intricately decorated with stylized flowers. In the centre, there is a finely painted enamel plaque portraying the Muse Calliope, known as the Muse of epic poetry, rhetoric, philosophy, and science, seated with a writing tablet and stylus at the base of a column. The Muse is surrounded by arched white enamel cartouches adorned with Arabic numerals. The watch is equipped with a full plate movement, verge escapement, chain/fusee, and a three-arm brass balance.

The Bordier brothers were established watchmakers by 1794; by 1815, they were involved in the creation of the Grand Mézel. In 1794, they formed a partnership with Roux and Romand, founding the company Bordier, Roux, Romand & Cie. From 1794 to 1811, they focused on producing self-winding repeater watches and intricate skeleton perpetual calendar watches, often adorned with enamel paintings, pearls, and precious stones.
