Gold automaton watch with jacquemarts by Berthoud
–
A Swiss 18 carat gold quarter repeating automaton watch with Jacquemarts, circa 1800. The watch features a gilded full plate movement with a verge escapement, and a pierced and engraved balance bridge, repeating on coiled gongs made of blued steel. The dial includes a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and a central gold neoclassical building. A Jacquemart figure appears in the upper gallery to strike the hours, while two putti below strike the quarters. The case is crafted from 18 carat gold with an engine turned back and a gilt cuvette, bearing the signature Berthoud.

The movement is operational, with running and repeating functions, but the jacquemarts are not striking at the correct time. The dial shows tarnishing against the blued steel backplate, the chapter ring has been restored, and there is a repair on the minute hand. The case is significantly worn, with indentations on the back and scuffs throughout.

Signed: Berthoud
