Silver pocket watch with signed cuvette

A numbered verge watch with an early Jacquemart figure automaton, made by the Frères Esquivillon & DeChoudens in Genève, Switzerland, circa 1800. The open faced plain case of this watch was crafted from silver and has a reeded band and a numbered cuvette. The face has an especially beautiful version of the figure automaton with three coloured figures of very fine quality, a central screwed white dial with black Arabic hour numerals and Breguet hands. The movement has a verge escapement repeating the hours and quarters and a Jacquemart figure automaton.

Geneva Master watchmakers were active in the last quarter of the 18th century and the early 19th century. In 1774, Gédéon-François Esquivillon (1717-1799) became associated with his brothers, Joseph Esquivillon (1714-1798) and Jean François Esquivillon (1733-1813), and Jaques DeChoudens (or Deschoudens 1728-1801). They founded a workshop in Genève which produced high quality verge pocket watches, specializing in automatic figures, rare form – and music watches and have sometimes signed “Es. et Dech.”.
The company Esquivillon et DeChoudens à Genève belonged to the most important Geneva automaton manufacturers. They produced pocket watches with different figure automatons with up to seven motion sequences.
