Gold and enamel verge in triple cases

A rare Swiss 20 carat gold and enamel triple-cased verge pocket watch, circa 1760. Full plate fire gilt movement. Pierced and engraved cock, foot and plate, garnet endstone, silver regulator disc, fusee and chain, worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. White enamel dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes, metal stone-set hands. Gold pierced and engraved inner case, the pendant and bow also gold, a two-colour gold outer case, the front bezel set with white stones, a large oval enamel miniature portrait in a stone-set frame of a young lady in a classical dress, the border of dark blue translucent enamel set with diamonds in a pierced white metal setting, the third case with horn on the side and a glazed cover to protect the enamel. Comes with a key and a small chain.

A very similar gold and enamel spindle pocket watch by Abraham Colomby is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Watches of this kind with a third case are rare.

Abraham Colomby (Collomb, Colombi or Colomb) was a watchmaker and retailer. He was born on Thursday, January 12, 1702, in Geneva as the son of watchmaker Jean Pierre Collomb (1659-1738) and Jeanne Mussard (1657-1726). Mother Jeanne was the daughter of the master goldsmith Jean le Jeune Mussard and grandson of Pierre l’Aîn Mussard also a master goldsmith. Grandfather Jacques Collomb (1608-1695) was already a watchmaker in Geneva. Abraham Colomby was the brother of Jean Antoine Collomb and Pierre Jaques Collomb.
