A large Swiss 18 carat gold open faced keyless pocket watch made for the Spanish market by Patek, Philippe & Cie in Geneva, circa 1885. Frosted gilt movement with a straight line moustache lever escapement, 17 jewels, wolf’s tooth winding, a cut bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel balance spring and an index regulator.
Decoratively chased gilt dial with blue Roman hours on oval white enamel cartouches, an outer blue dot minute track with five minute baton markers on a white enamel chapter ring and fine blued steel hands. The case with a chased and engraved decorated bezel and band, the back is cast and chased with St. George and the Dragon and the motto S. Georgius Equitum Patronus (St. George Patron of Horses in English), the interior with a scene of Christ on a ship at a rough sea and the motto In Tempestate Securita (Security in the Storm). Dial, case and movement signed, case and movement with matching numbers.

This piece is a particularly large example of ‘St. George & the Dragon’ watches from Patek Philippe, which are usually of pendant size. It is also unusual for their watch movements to be signed in a language other than French or English, and thus, the present watch would have been intended for the Spanish speaking market.
